I am extremely proud to be Headteacher of Somervale School, particularly as it has improved so much over recent years and was awarded a ‘good’ judgement by Ofsted in January 2013 in recognition of this outstanding progress. Examination results have hit record levels and the school was rightly recognised by Nick Gibb, the Schools Minister, as one of the best 100 schools in the country for progress. Recent outcomes achieved at Somervale place the school well above the national average for pupil attainment and achievement in Mathematics. The school’s excellence in Arts education has also been recognised with the award of the prestigious Arts Mark Gold standard. Somervale is one of the best schools in Bath and North East Somerset and its strong partnership with Norton Hill gives youngsters at Somervale exceptional opportunities. The school’s attendance and behaviour has been held up as an example for other schools in the South West to follow as has the exceptional care, support and guidance students receive, which was judged as ‘outstanding’ in a recent external review in March 2014.

Dear Parents/Carers,
If you use Somervale’s front car park for dropping off students at the beginning and end of the day you will realise that we have new attendants. We have asked for advice and clarification from the community police on what the key duties of these attendants should be, as the community police recommend a change of current practice I wanted to make you aware of the changes.
The attendants’ responsibility going forward is to manage the safe crossing of students at the entrance of the car park and ensure that traffic is stopped to allow this safe passage. We are looking into further traffic calming measures at the entrance to the car park to make this safer. The attendants will no longer be responsible for supporting parking or managing traffic flow from the main (Redfield) road. We have been advised that this is the responsibility of drivers themselves and enforcement is the responsibility of the police.
As our two attendants are new to the role I would ask for your support and patience as they adapt to these new responsibilities. These changes will undoubtedly make parking at busy periods more challenging and parents may like to consider alternative parking or modes of transport, especially where walking is possible.
The school has been told that we should not take responsibility for safe parking and traffic flow as this is the personal responsibility of drivers. I hope you will understand that we have to follow advice here and should not exceed our remit for students’ safety.
Can I also remind visitors and parents that the main Somervale School car park beyond the green gates are for staff and visitors to the school only. Parents should not be dropping off, or waiting for students, past the green gates. This is to prevent congestion and allow emergency access arrangements.
Yours faithfully
Mark Kenny
Deputy Headteacher
